Mini trials are perfect if you have small numbers wishing to enter a trial and are also a lovely way for teams to have their first experience of a Talking Dogs Rally Trial. A big thank you to Gemma for preparing the paperwork for me for both trials – very much appreciated. On the 29th March and 12th April I hosted and judged mini trials. Due to hall availability we had to run them as two trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

29th March\u00a0<\/strong> This was a truly mini trial with 6 teams in total. We had Level 1, PL2 and Level 2 rounds. Due to time constraints the PL2 and Level 2 were the same course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a hectic morning for Sarah who worked all 3 of her dogs! Inca at Level 1, Reo at Pre Level 2 and Ted at Level 2. They are very different dogs and Sarah handles them all brilliantly. As well as gaining an Ace and an Outstanding rosette Ted also gained his Level 2 Championship – you need 14 qualifying scores to gain this, so no mean feat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jude was also kept on her toes working  Harry at Pre Level 2 and Florence at Level 1. Doing different rounds in quick succession can be challenging but they handled it well Harry coming away with 2 Good rosettes and Florence with an Ace and an Outstanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lauren and Jasper did PL2 and Lauren\u2019s calm, encouraging handling resulted in them achieving 2 Ace rosettes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jane Hagger Memorial Trophy<\/strong> Jane was a great supporter of Talking Dogs Rally and loved entering with her two Border Collies Edric and Quiz. She was always happy to help out at trials and was very encouraging to others. Sadly Jane is no longer with us and this is the 2nd year of awarding the trophy in her memory. This year it was awarded to Sarah and Ted. Sarah is always the first to offer to help both at trials and promotional events such as the North East Dog Festival. She is incredibly supportive of everyone else both in class and at trials. Despite only being 6, Ted is sadly loosing his eye sight but watching them do a Talking Dogs Rally round together it\u2019s really difficult to tell. Sarah has adapted his training brilliantly and they are continuing to enjoy the sport and do very well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12th April\u00a0<\/strong> A busier day this time with 11 teams, but we just did Level 1, so only one course change allowing everyone to do two rounds. It was great to welcome four new teams to their first trial and despite first time nerves everyone did exceptionally well. Throughout the morning their was a lovely atmosphere with everyone support and encouraging each other.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirsty and Dolly – 2 x Ace. This was Kirsty and Dolly\u2019s first Talking Dogs Rally trial and they did very well.\u00a0Nicola and Visi – 2 x Ace.\u00a0It\u2019s been several years since Nicola has done a trial and it was lovely to see her back in action. This time with Old English Sheepdog Visi for her first trial.\u00a0 Emily and Frank – 2 x Ace. Emily and Frank are relatively new to Talking Dogs Rally and this was their first trial. Well done Emily on overcoming your nerves to get such great scores. Janice and Flossi – 2 x Outstanding. This was also a first trial for Janice and Flossi and they had a great time coming away with two purples.\u00a0 Georgina and Camden – 2 x Outstanding. Georgina worked both Camden and Devon today. They are both very different requiring Georgina to adapt her handling skills. Camden was very enthusiastic and loved his rounds today – exactly what we are looking for in Talking Dogs Rally.\u00a0 Georgina and Devon – Ace and Outstanding. Lovely rounds from Georgina and Devon with nice attention from Devon throughout. Moira and Annie – 2 x Ace. Lovely calm handling which suits Annie perfectly, well done. Linda and Hattie – 2 x Ace. Linda kept Hattie\u2019s focus really well throughout the round.\u00a0 Sirja and Daisy – 2 x Ace. Superb pivots and call fronts from Sirja and Daisy – a pleasure to judge. Lesley and Mitro – 2 x Ace. It\u2019s been a while since Lesley and Mitro have been able to do a trial and it was lovely to see them back. They definitely made their comeback in style with their two red rosettes.\u00a0Gemma and Dreya – 2 x Ace. Dreya is my dog, but when with Gemma you really wouldn\u2019t know as she only has eyes for Gemma! Gemma walks on crutches and can\u2019t go very fast, so she has worked very hard to teach Dreya to maintain her pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the windy conditions, we all had a lovely day at the Elham Trial last weekend. This is a great venue with greenery all around and views across the valley. It does, however, pose some challenges for judges who struggle to anchor the signs on the tennis courts despite the use of copious sand and gravel bags. The fact that the next station in your course may take flight before you reach it, adds a new dimension to TDR\u00ae!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had the privilege of judging Level 3 courses and their variations and PL2 and Level 2 along with Veteran Level 2. All of my Level 3 entrants did themselves proud, achieving a range of scores and rosettes. Level 3 is a challenge for most teams and the jump from Level 2 to 3 is a big one. It was Debbie and Winnie’s first attempt at the level and they really did pull off a joyous Outstanding round. As a judge I would always rather see a dog clearly enjoying the work and tackling exercises with enthusiasm even if the results are not perfect. Well done Team Winnie, your enjoyment was contagious! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my Veteran Level 3 round I must make special mention of Kay and Kiri who came out of semi-retirement from TDR\u00ae and pulled off an impressive Outstanding. That tail never stopped wagging Kiri!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my Level 2 rounds Ali and Maya and Steve and Sweep dropped just 3 points and Veronica and Charlie narrowly missed the elusive 210 Perfect with a 209. I love the non-competitive element of TDR\u00ae and the fact that this enables teams to judge their own improvements free from comparison to others. Gill and Tallie blew me away in their round, the improvement fronm the last time I judged the team was phenomenal- well done Team Tallie!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was great to work alongside my fellow judges to create a friendly supportive atmosphere as is usual in our sport. Congratulations to Amanda on her first live trial judging. Thanks to Lyn, Sue, Mike and your team of helpers from the Club. Here’s to next year!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Online Trial March 2026<\/em><\/strong>– Blog by Jacky Ruddock<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We held a very successful Online Trial running through February to March with a record breaking excess of 140 entries. Standards were generally high but there were also a record number of NQs incurred for two main reasons. Treat Rewards<\/em><\/strong> We encourage the use of treats from Puppy through to Level 3+ Classes, however there are several rules which must be adhered to when rewarding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No treat must be carried when the dog is moving or used as a LURE to prompt a movement. A treat must be delivered directly from the hand to the dog’s mouth. A free reward is allowed at each stationary element of a station but beware that this can sometimes occur a deduction for Flow if multiple rewards interrupt the fluidity of the round. An extra reward will incur a 2-point deduction but must be directly delivered as above. Unlimited rewards are permitted in Puppy rounds but the same rules apply as above. No treat bags are to be carried in a round and treats should be carried in a pocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tight Leads\/Lead Prompts <\/em><\/strong> Tight leads can result in a NQ when they exceed the permitted amount for the level of the course. Please ensure that you maintain a loose lead at all times; it helps to work on a longer lead so that you are not tempted to tighten it when turning etc.( I use a 2m ). A lead prompt is when the lead is used to encourage the dog to complete a manouevre, e.g. a sit or a finish. This is costly (5 points). Touching your dog to prompt a station will always lead to an NQ whereas physical PRAISE is permitted and encouraged! Judges hate having to NQ rounds so please always take this as a learning experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was invited to judge the club’s first live trial by Lorraine Rohland of Lincs. Dog Training. Luckily for us all, the trial was held in the club’s indoor facility as there was rain of biblical proportions all day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the teams had dipped their toes in the TDR\u00ae world by competing in the last Online Trial but for others, this was their first experience of anything outside training sessions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone performed incredibly well for their first live trial and conquered the nervous energy to produce rounds worthy of an Outstanding or Ace. There were too many excellent examples of amazing teamwork to mention individual teams so I have selected just a few. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Linda and the adorable Alfie pulled off a faultless round and achieved the elusive 210,Ace Perfect; no mean feat in your first live trial! It is obvious watching this team, that Linda and Alfie have a partnership rooted in affection and mutual respect. A team to watch!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was great to see Jeanette back in the TDR\u00ae ring following a few years break. She handled her little Chinese Crested, Mack with skill and the team thoroughly deserved the two Aces they achieved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s always refreshing to see the range of breeds competing in TDR\u00ae and today was no exception. Hayley and Nick brought out the best in the two Austalian Cattle Dogs Foxie and Smurf and achieved an Outstanding and an Ace repsectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our two young dogs gave their best and both achieved Outstanding in the Puppy Class. Remi is an exuberant Dobermann and Bruce had to work hard to keep her calm in the ring without destroying her confidence. Eddie is a total goofball, a Giant Schnauzer with lanky legs and huge paws. Kate should be proud of all she is achieving with this intelligent boy. You deserved that Outstanding Kate!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I look forward to judging you all again in the future; keep up the good work. Thank you Lorraine and crew for welcoming me to your lovely venue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Risby Blog Saturday 24 Jan- by Jacky Burden

Our Risby weekend started with 8 dogs in the hotel bar on Friday evening! (10 dogs staying there that weekend.) My trial was split into 2 parts \u2013 judging all levels on Saturday & competing on Sunday.
The trial hall was chilly on Saturday and the small hall was warm. Most teams enjoyed working in aless distracting, inside environment although the floor surface did cause difficulties for a few.

Jenny had a good day with her Goldies- L1 Champ and PL2 Award of Excellence with Betsy and a VL2 Title with Evie. Other AOEs went to Deidre and Mitzi ,L1 and Steve and Bramble at L2.

The PL2\/L2 course used a couple of combinations that were new to some & caused a fair bit of
discussion and practice! Debbie and Winnie Titled at this level, Alison & Goose worked a delightful 210 Perfect round to gain their L2 Title and Lucy and Rory gained their Championship.

Congratulations to all those teams winning awards.

I thoroughly enjoyed Bill and Mitzi\u2019s L3 round which was worked accurately to a 205 score and all the VL3 had a really good go at the course, resulting in Aces across the board. Finally the challenging L3+ course was attempted by 3 teams who all gained qualifying scores \u2013 well done!

I loved to see the care the handlers were taking of their dogs, the encouragement given and the
awareness to move on when a dog was struggling with a station. This concern for the dog\u2019s welfare was epitomised when Dave changed to a Training Round with his pup, who was stressed and struggling with confidence \u2013 so good to see Dave make the most of this opportunity for Angus!

On Sunday the trial hall was super warm and the small hall was chilly \u2013 just saying (nothing personal,I\u2019m sure! :)) I had the chance to work Amber at a couple of lower Veteran levels and we thoroughly enjoyed Sue\u2019s courses.

An indoor Risby is always friendly & efficiently run & a lovely opportunity to catch up with others
during the winter months. Huge thanks to Lucy, Fran and team for organising this event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A big thank you to Lucy for organizing her wonderful trial indoors in January for us!We all know organizing trials is a trial at times, but Lucy had it working like clockwork as always. Shame the weather didn\u2019t quite play ball for us but at least we weren\u2019t chasing signs around the field and fighting to hold score sheets down for marking \ud83d\ude0a<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had a lovely job judging all TDR levels on Sunday (Just like Jacky on the previous day!), it was hectic but as a judge you soon learn to nest your courses and pair your signs to fit everything in and give people a challenging but fun course to complete. Just a few puppies for me to watch having a fabulous waggy tail time with their handlers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Level One was a busy level and had plenty of challenges including the dreaded spiral(!) executed well by everyone. My advice would be to just slow down a little and trust your teamwork ability, it\u2019s often way better than you think it is \ud83d\ude0a<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, especially with the pups and Level Ones dogs, I would probably reward a little more often, even if that meant losing a couple of points here or there. I would rather see a motivated, happy dog than one that starts lagging, or becoming unsure what side it should be working on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hope Level Two teams were happy –  we opted for no jumps in the hall due to Health and Safety concerns, so the course needed to find challenge elsewhere, of course with recalls and distance control, (as a judge and handler distance control is one of my favourite exercises!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Level 3 and 3+ had equally as many challenges for me to set up as it did for the teams to complete\u2026.. Frances also happened to be in there \u201cwarming herself up\u201d watching and laughing at me trying to change my course and get numbers in the right order! A fun day for all I hope? And a challenge for me indeed as heading towards the end of my day, my cold had definitely caught up with me, and I apologise to teams for the smell of the pharmacy that I had on the stage all day keeping me going!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday (16th November) I headed up to Northumberland (Only a 30 minute drive!) to judge a mini trial at The Dog Log\u2019s training venue. Mini trials are a great introduction to Talking Dogs Rally and also perfect if there aren\u2019t many people ready to compete within a geographic area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was grateful for a dry, albeit a little chilly day as we were outside. We had 6 teams entered, 4 doing Level 1, 1 at Veteran Level 1 (I kept the level 1 and Veteran level 1 course the same except for one station) and 1 at Veteran Level 2. I\u2019ve judged most of the teams previously and it was lovely to see them all again. I was kept topped up with coffee and delicious home made cake made by Abbie (I may have had 3 pieces it was so nice!). There was a lovely atmosphere as you always find at Talking Dogs Rally Trials and everyone supported each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was so nice to see the progression since the last time I\u2019d judged at this venue. All handlers were calm and patient with their dogs; encouraging where they needed to be and also really patient whilst their dogs were working it out. The countryside silence was randomly interrupted by sounds of cyclists and cars passing and neighbouring dogs barking which concerned a few of the dogs, but everyone handled it really well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were a few nerves for their first round, which is to be expected, but everyone settled into it really well. So much so that for their second round everyone came away with very well deserved ACE rosettes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suffolk TD Rally \u2013 a trial of three halves!<\/em><\/strong>– Blog by Frances Page<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another day, another Rally trial. Travelling to the Erskine centre with our wonderful trial organiser Lucy Dawson, she commented how easy these one ring trials were to manage and in her experience, they usually run themselves. This has definitely been true in the past, however, on some days it is best not to tempt fate, and this was one of those days. The day started as normal, we arrived at the hall, opened up, put the money in the meter for the heating, then set up our admin area in the small hall in anticipation of a relaxed and fun day rallying with friends. Our excellent judges Tanya and Rhia arrived in good time, with Sophie who was there to shadow judge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First course set, and the puppies were in. All teams worked well, with Lucy and Nico, and Laura and Edward gaining their puppy titles. Congratulations to them. Veteran level 1 course set out and being walked when in our little admin hall, we were approached by a lady who looked slightly out of place in her party dress, compared to the sensible dog working attire the rest of us were sporting. This was where Lucy\u2019s theories on the ease of running a one ring trial were put to the test. It transpired that there had been a booking error, and though we had the hall booked for the whole day, so did this lady for her 5-year old\u2019s birthday party complete with bouncy castle due to arrive at any moment! While this was going on judging of VL1 continued. Nothing gets in the way of Rally. As the birthday party booking was taken before ours, we felt that it was the right thing for us to try to find another venue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tanya, Rhia and Sophie took the L1 course outside onto the field while Lucy managed to secure another venue. We have to give a big shout out to Jane from Pup School Suffolk for allowing us with absolutely no notice to use her hall. Without this, the rest of the first day\u2019s trial would have had to be cancelled. Level 1 completed and the morning classes presented we vacated the centre, with its bouncy castle and imminent arrival of 30 children, and hotfooted it up to just over the Norfolk border about an hour away! Our Suffolk trial had now become an East Anglian trial!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the afternoon superb use of a smaller space by Tanya and Rhia, and their beloved trademark nesting of signs, allowed all the scheduled L2, 3 and 3+ rounds to go ahead. Congratulations to Jenny with Evie for their AoE in VL2. However, the award for most entertaining round would have to go to Lucy and Katie for their L3+ Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view) there is no video evidence for this round, which was an exemplary demonstration of how good humour is essential when working with animals, and that even those dogs working a higher level can throw a spanner in the works of a rally round while maintaining good heelwork. Suffice it to say, those of us watching may just have laughed out loud not only at Katie\u2019s antics, but also Lucy\u2019s commentary all the way round. Sunday dawned for day two, and this time it was only an afternoon scheduled, which took place as planned at the Erskine Centre for which all breathed a sigh of relief, especially Lucy, Tanya and Rhia I would imagine. The afternoon proceeded smoothly. This was a day of titles and championships, Jo and Jasper, and Jo and Olive attained VL1 championships, Jo and Holly gained their L1 title. Sophie and Yogi gained their L1 championship, and Sophie and Juno puppy championship. Congratulations to all. My apologies for anyone I may have missed in the achievements stakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The take home messages from this trial are: It is very useful to have a back-up venue in mind when planning a trial \u2013 it helps to have friends with training halls.  Dog people, and especially TD Rally competitors, judges, and trial organisers are adaptable and cope when things don\u2019t go according to plan. I would rather be at a TD Rally trial rather than a birthday party for 30 5-year olds, even if there is a bouncy castle! Final word to Lucy, who would like to thank everyone for their ability to cope with change, with good humour and understanding. This took what was a stressful situation and made it into something fun to talk about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    September weather on the island can be a bit hit & miss! However, we were pretty lucky

    this time with no real extremes & some lovely autumn sunshine on Sunday.

    Our island rally family were joined from several mainland teams. It\u2019s always nice to

    catch up with our northern teams & of course the Bognor Massive who are now an

    integral part of our island trials. All were kept in check through the day by Ginny & Sarah

    who run a tight, slightly crazy, ship from the secretary\u2019s tent!

    Judges Jayne, Tanya, Rhia, Jack R & I witnessed some lovely teamwork. Improvements

    since the May trial were clear to see from the scores on the doors (showing my age!) at

    the end of the day.

    117 Aces, 15 Outstanding & 7 Good rosettes were awarded.

    There were numerous 210 Perfects with several teams \u2018doing the double\u2019.

    It\u2019s always lovely to see a well-supported puppy class. These are our Rally teams of the

    future with some handlers dipping their toes into trials for the first time.

    Kay, I know, was extremely nervous for her first trial with her little mini wire-haired

    dachshund, Monty. It was lovely to see them relax & settle into the weekend gaining 3

    qualifying scores & their puppy title.

    Some dogs really make their handlers work for it! Dawn\u2019s Beagle, River, is one of those

    dogs! In true Beagle style, River loves to sniff her way round & has \u2018got previous\u2019 for

    having the occasional wee! But when she\u2019s on it, boy does she work well. Dawn\u2019s face

    was a picture when she finished her L1 round on Saturday morning. I\u2019m not sure if it

    was joy or pure relief! Either way it was a hard earned but well deserved 209! Well done!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There were a variety of dance moves witnessed at this trial! From Kiley\u2019s \u2018Fame\u2019 inspired

    jump in the air when Freddie unexpectedly smashed his PL2 bonus, to Charlotte\u2019s

    YMCA to try & break Barney from the most spectacular sit, wait! Sunday was rounded

    off by Jacky R & Peggy demonstrating their catwalk moves with Kim on hand for a spot of

    line dancing!

    It was suggested that I strut my way around my 3+ course……at this point I knew was

    A View from a Desk<\/strong>

    The table steward, or desk jockey, is the person responsible for transferring the scores
    as they come from the judge in the ring onto a tally sheet, which is then sent to Jacky R
    at the end of the trial. I guess we do a bit more than that, like answering questions and
    telling you when you\u2019re up. But mostly, it\u2019s the scoresheets.
    At the Southbourne mini trial, before transferring the score, I check the scoresheet. I
    wouldn\u2019t know if you had an Additional Cue, used a Lure, or that your dog was
    Significantly Out of Place. But I do know that they cost one point, one point and two
    points respectively. So I add up the station scores and ensure their total matches that
    calculated by the judge, Jacky B. When that didn\u2019t happen, I went back to her to ask. For
    one team, one station had AC L AC, but Jacky had marked it as four, not three. For
    another, she deducted the points dropped on the bonus round twice. These might seem
    trivial.
    For that second round, the three extra points were the difference between an
    Outstanding \u2013 188 \u2013 and an Ace \u2013 191. But for the first round, it meant more than that.
    First, it moved the score from 189 to 190. Outstanding to Ace. But also, that was the
    team\u2019s third Ace from starting Level One, meaning they should receive an Award of
    Excellence, which everybody celebrated.
    That joy is what I like about TDR trials the most. It\u2019s fun. It\u2019s about you and your dog
    without the clamouring competitiveness of other trials, and the team can develop at its
    own pace. Each win recognised and rewarded. And you know what? When that doesn\u2019t
    happen? Most times, it\u2019s not the dog.

    Armchair Pets\u2019 Mini-TDR trial Sunday 31st August 2025 \u2013 Carron Stacey<\/strong>

    Armchair Pets\u2019 mini Rally trial was my fourth day of trials since I started over a year ago. My team
    (Hugo Bear the cockapoo and I) have now titled at Level 1 and have nearly achieved our
    Championship. So it was time to move to on lead pre Level 2.
    Our morning Level 1 entry yielded an Ace. Howard and Claire ran the desk professionally, Judge
    Jacky was really supportive and Armchair Pets\u2019 Frances was on board to help with those last minute
    checks – is the dog meant to be on my right now or left?!
    There\u2019s a lovely atmosphere waiting around in between trials. Luckily the sun shone for us with
    only a smattering of rain. There\u2019s a wonderful camaraderie between us all. How did you do? How
    did that go? Don\u2019t worry, you\u2019ll be fine.. We\u2019re only competing against ourselves.
    The moment came for my first ever Pre Level 2. There were about four signs that blew my mind!
    We all went over them in the hall during the walk around and yes, I was clear about them. Dog on
    this side, I walk this way round. Got it. Gilly calmed me down during a mini panic attack: it\u2019s
    supposed to be fun! No one was more surprised than me when presented with an Outstanding
    rosette!
    The Rally family really are a family. We all support and cheer each other on. We all commiserate
    with each other when we NQ. More than this, we laugh with each other and have fun. You can\u2019t
    wish for more than that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What a wonderful day I had on Wednesday judging 10 members of Bourne Ralliers in Southbourne. The sun shone on us as we sat in the outside area at lunchtime eating, drinking and getting to know each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There were 16 rounds worked, scoring 14 Aces and 2 Outstandings, quite an achievement! The quality of loose lead working was the best I\u2019ve seen in a club and I did not mark 1 Tight Lead or Lead Prompt the whole day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Julie worked Amber, Judge Jacky\u2019s dog. This is no easy feat, especially when your mum is just outside. Julie\u2019s gentle patient attitude paid off and the Team achieved 2 Aces earning a Vet L1 Title and AOE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Avril and Isla worked 2 rounds achieving an Outstanding and Ace. Isla is a nervous little girl and Avril reads her and accommodates her needs. Great work Team Isla!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Julie worked 1 Ace round with \u2018Barky Barney\u2019. I was amazed that Julie was able to calm Barney\u2019s initial manic enthusiasm into a round to be proud of. Well done Julie; I love to see a happy dog!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lynne and Cassie are a team to watch. Lynne achieved 2 Aces with her little rescue girl. Lynne worked carefully and accurately considering her dog\u2019s needs along the way. 2 rounds to be proud of!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Liam and hid Frenchie Romeo achieved 2 Aces and demonstrated how this sport really does work for all breeds. This is a partnership that\u2019s meant to be, great work boys!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Nellie the Goldie worked with both Susan and Rob today and achieved Aces in both. It was interesting to watch both handlers and the difference in Nellie when working with both. This girl is slow but careful and accurate which helps her handlers to take time to process each station. Well done retrieving that burger Nellie!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Bill and Lurcher Evie worked their first live Level 2 rounds and achieved an Outstanding and an Ace. Bill impressed me by asking lots of questions during the walkthrough which enabled him to flow around the course without spending too much time hesitating. I love the way in which Bill always considers what\u2019s best for his dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ali and Maya worked two Level 2 Courses and Aced both of them. This is a tight team with masses of potential to work through the levels. Well done working despite not feeling 100% Ali. Hope to see you at a live trial soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I will end with the sweetest moment of my day. Andra worked Mabel for the last time in TDR. Mabel is approaching 14 years old and has recently showed signs of Doggy Dementia. She was always a beautiful worker who gave her very best in the ring and today was no exception. Mabel remembered exactly what to do in the ring and her tail wagged her to a Perfect 210 score; what a way to leave a sport! Have a long, happy retirement dear Mabel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Watercombe Trial, 28 June- blog by Judge Jacky R<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What a wonderful weekend Sue and I enjoyed judging at the recent Watercombe Trial. The weather was rather too warm on the Saturday and clammy but mainly overcast on the Sunday. As a result judges decided to reduce the number of stations in the courses to limit the amount of time the dogs were working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Results were mixed but many teams produced pleasing teamwork. A few teams worthy of a mention are-<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Tracy and Louie- achieved their Level 1 Championship over the course of the weekend. Kim and Cody- achieved their Veteran Level 2 Championship. Maureen and Connie- achieved their Veteran Pre-Level 2 Championship. Colette and Sona- achieved an Ace Perfect in Level 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Special mentions must go to- Carol with Humphrey and Hector, her 2 mischievous little Shih Tzus. Carol worked her socks off and eventually managed to persuade her boys to work. Rebecca and Billie- this team have made huge strides since I judged them last year, keep it up. Tanya and Fraser- after struggling with Fraser on lead in PL2, Tanya worked 2 beautiful L2 rounds. This demonstrates that the lead can be a distraction for both human and dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Learning Points- Always check that you dog is fully down with elbows on the ground before moving off.
    Check that you perform 3 steps and not 1,2,2!
    Check the required Finish carefully on the walkthrough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There were many humorous moments during the weekend including Kim and crew believing that Rob was in fact Steve and consistently misnaming him. Watching Rob attempting to persuade Nellie to change to fast pace by mincing alongside was a sight to behold! Last but not least I must mention our resident model Peggy whose attire always contrasts beautifully with that of Judge Jacky; lovely to have someone so beautifully turned out at our trials!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The sun shone & the temperature was about perfect on Sunday at Chichester TalkingDogs Rally. It was lovely to welcome some new to TDR & new to Chichester Trial teams. There were an unusual number of NQs & Training Rounds with a distracting environment & recently cut grass. The courses were magnificently challenging – the Goldies rolled, many dogs sniffed, some teams lost their way but spirits remained high!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There were no 210 Perfects, although Bill & Mitzi were very close with a super 209 in L3. We awarded 1 Champ, 8 Titles & 2 Awards of Excellence. Congratulations to JoJo with Mocha, Melody with Taz & Vixen, Lyn & Leo, Philippa & Freddie, Bill & Evie, Steve & Bramble, Ali & Maya & Carron & Hugo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We saw some beautiful handling with lovely praise & encouragement. I enjoyed seeing Wendy\u2019s patient handling to support her Goldie, Robshaw, to his 1st Outstanding result in L1, after changing to a Training Round in the morning. Another sight to remember will be Claire\u2019s Jelly, who seems to have been rallying forever & belied her years bouncing round the L3+ course!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Thank you to Armchair Pets & all involved in the organisation, to our amazing judges\u2013 Lisa, Tanya, Rhia & Sue & to all who helped erect & dismantle rings, etc., & took part with such friendliness & positivity in true TDR style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cI have previously been a helper at a TDR Rally but this time I was able to work a friend\u2019s dog. I was so impressed by the support given by the judges, helpers and other competitors. Everyone genuinely wants all competitors to do well in their rounds. Helpful advice was offered by the judges after each round. It was a friendly, fun, sometimes a little stressful, day. The organisers and helpers work incredibly hard to ensure that the day runs smoothly and everyone has an enjoyable experience. It was fascinating watching the other competitors handling their dogs in different ways, the interesting reactions by the dogs when deciding they didn\u2019t understand their handler\u2019s instructions and the joy when rosettes are handed out. A thoroughly enjoyable and uplifting day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Another great day hosting a Talking Dogs Rally Trial at Kirkley Hall Equestrian Centre in Northumberland.Firstly a massive thanks to Jayne for coming up and judging for us – it is massively appreciated.Also a big thanks to Sarah and Linda for bringing cake (Delicious – I tried a piece of each just to check!!) as well as helping with setting up, course changes and clear down. Thanks also to Emma and Moira for your help with set up, course changes and clear down. Without you all I couldn\u2019t run the trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Kirkley Hall is a fabulous venue allowing us to have two very large rings, perfect for flowing courses. It is though also a challenging environment for many dogs as it is of course used by horses as well as agility classes and competitions being run there and some very vocal birds flying round! I think that a few of the dogs actually thought the surface was similar to the beach! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So that everyone was judged by both Jayne and myself, Jayne\u2019s day started judging L3+ and I started at Level 1 which worked really nicely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was lovely to welcome Sarah & Finn and Vicky & Poppy who travelled from the Isle of Wight; both teams handled the new environment very well. I believe it\u2019s quite different with it being inside and the texture of the surface, but this didn\u2019t phase the dogs.For many of the level 1 teams this was their first time doing a trial at the equestrian centre and found it quite challenging in the morning. In these situations it\u2019s very easy to think everything is going wrong, but remember it\u2019s usually much better than you think. In the afternoon rounds there was a massive improvement in all teams – well done. Mabel was definitely convinced she was at the beach, but Stephanie remained calm showing lovely handling to come away with an Ace rosette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Working 3 dogs at 3 levels keeps you on your toes and busy, but Sarah with her trio of Ted, Reo and Inca handles it brilliantly. They are 3 very different dogs and Sarah has to adapt her handling for each of them. Ted is loosing his eye sight and can find it challenging at times, but he did really well coming away with two Ace rosettes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The size of the venue allowed us to have two large, flowing Level 3 + rounds which both Emma & Wilf and Ann & Stuie handled brilliantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was with great pleasure that we presented Emma with the Jane Hagger Memorial Trophy: In loving memory of Jane Hagger celebrating the true spirit of Talking Dogs Rally. We were honoured to present this to Emma and Zara who were a true partnership. Emma is supportive and encouraging, always helps out and Zara embodied the spirit of Talking Dogs Rally. She was a true ambassador to her breed and everyone that knew her loved her. They were a pleasure to watch at trials and team Zara will always be fondly remembered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We had a fabulous time at the May trail in the Isle of Wight. It’s the 2nd time we’ve entered. They are super friendly and really well organised.  The courses were judged by Tanya, Rhia and Jacky R – really nice courses even with the food station which my labrador struggled to resist. We came home with 3 ace rosettes and an NQ – handler error. Lead On Dog Training Club members always put on a beautiful buffet FOC and cater for every dietary requirement. There were paddle pools for any dogs who fancied a splash. Plenty of room to exercise your dog or practice between rounds. They accommodate for dogs who need extra room enabling everyone to enjoy the day. A really great venue and welcoming trial – we will definitely be back again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Risby Trial Blog-by Jacky Ruddock<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Reurning to trial at Risby always feels like going to a very large coffee date with your friends and this weekend was no exception. Sadly I had to give Saturday a miss following an allergic attack; a big thanks to Judge Rhia for stepping into my place. The weather was kind to humans and dogs, not too hot and not too cold. The trial was well attended as usual and our catering lady was kept busy rustling up her legendary bacon sandwiches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was great to see the regular faces along with some relative newbies and returning member Chris Clements with her new WSD puppy, Chichiara. It’s wonderful to see the friendships within TDR\u00ae just pick up where they left off despite the passage of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Results were mixed but most teams achieved at least one qualifying score over the weekend. The most common NQ was for deviating away from the course; don’t forget to use your walkthrough time productively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There are too many teams achieving AOEs, Titles and Championships to talk about but I must mention a few- Chris Clements and Chichiara- achieved 4 Aces earning her Puppy Title and an AOE; welcome back Chris! David Street and Mungo- proudly achieved their Vet L1 Championship Liz Warren and her Rhodesian Ridgeback Lula struggled with focus in my ring but went on to achieve their Level 1 Championship. Gill Bignall and the livewire Tallie worked 4 Ace rounds, achieved their Level 1 Title and demonstated tight teamwork and consistency. Ingrid Williams accompanied by the prancing Tandy smoothly achieved their Level 2 Championship having achieved 4 Aces. Jenny Bowden and Polly achieved their Level 3 Championship; no mean feat!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A big well done to all teams and a massive thankyou to Lucy, Frances, David and all who worked together to create a brilliant trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Elham trial,  5th April, was a fab day. Great fun for me, for both competing, and for shadow judging under experienced judge Rhia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was a windy day and helping to fill poo bags with stones from the driveway so the signs didn’t blow away was “different”!! Being my first experience of actually judging and scoring rounds it was an eye opener as to how difficult it is to keep track of what is happening in the round, and looking down at certain moments to write. Many times I wrote what I saw rather than the f, cmp, or tl but I got most of what Rhia had seen too. Many times I may have said ‘nice’ as a dog looked happy to do what was asked, and seeing the bond between the teams was great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Competing with your dog is always nerve wracking, but to judge, you just don’t want make the wrong decision. Many teams achieved their Titles\/Champs in the levels they were competing in which was great to see. I loved the camaraderie of the handlers and frequently heard them offering a word or 2 of support before teams entered the ring, or after the round, which was heartwarming. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What a great trial and sport to be a part of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sunday 9th February- Blog by Cristen Brown<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sunday 9th February was our first mini Northern Trial of 2025. We had level 1, pre level 2 and level 2 with the trial held at Monkchester Community Centre. This is the venue that those entered train at so a familiar setting, but the smells on the floor were still very appealing to several dogs!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We had 11 teams in total, 7 doing Level 1, 3 at pre level 2 and 1 team doing level 2. It was lovely to welcome 3 teams to their first Talking Dogs Rally trial, as well as Sarah introducing her third dog to Talking Dogs Rally. Here\u2019s a little round up of the 11 teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lesley & Mitro Despite having restricted mobility at the moment Lesley did very well. Thanks to all her training Mitro adapted to Lesley walking a little slower than usual and they came away with two well deserved Ace rosettes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sarah & Inca Although Sarah is an established TD Rallier this was Inca\u2019s first trial and she did really well. Inca only has three legs but that doesn\u2019t stop her at all and she was a joy to watch bouncing around the course. They came away with an Outstanding and an Ace rosette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Gemma & Dreya Dreya is one of my dogs but Gemma does a lot of training with her. Gemma walks on crutches so has had to adapt training and teach Dreya to walk at her pace. The training paid off and they came away with two Ace rosettes and their Level 1 Title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Georgina & Devon This was only Devon\u2019s second Talking Dogs Rally trial and he did well. Georgina took on board feedback after the first round and her handling in the second round was a pleasure to judge. They were awarded two Outstanding rosettes and their L1 title<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Linda & Hattie Being fairly new to Talking Dogs Rally this was Linda & Hattie\u2019s first trial. Nerves came into play for the first round (We all know about that one!) but Linda took on board all my feedback resulting in them getting a Good and an Ace rosette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Moira & Annie Moira and Annie have been training Talking Dogs Rally since mid 2024 and it was lovely to see them at their first trial. Moira has a lovely calm handling style which brings out the best in Annie and they were awarded an Outstanding and an Ace rosette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Claire & Hattie Another team new to Talking Dogs Rally, having only started 6 months ago, this was Claire & Hattie\u2019s first trial and they did very well coming away with a Good and an Outstanding rosette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sarah & Reo Working three dogs Sarah was kept busy today. All three dogs are very different and Sarah adapts her handling appropriately. Reo is a joy to watch and when he is fully focused he struts his way round the course. They gained an Outstanding and an Ace rosette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lauren & Jasper Lauren and Jasper are always a lovely team to watch and judge with Lauren\u2019s calm handling. I\u2019ve watched them progress over the years and Lauren always takes on any feedback implementing it via training. They got an Outstanding and an Ace rosette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sirja & Daisy This was Sirja and Daisy\u2019s first attempt at Pre Level 2 and they handled it like pros. Sirja has lovely handling which gets the best out of Daisy and they were rewarded with two Ace rosettes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sarah & Ted Ted unfortunately has diminishing eye sight and is having to learn how to adapt to this. He found the first round a little tricky (Although he still got an Ace rosette!). On the second round Sarah adapted her handling a little and they were awesome, only loosing 3 points and coming away with another Ace rosette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The camaraderie on the day was lovely. Thanks to everyone for staying at the end to help today up – it makes a big difference and to Gemma for preparing all the scoresheets in advance – very much appreciated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Our next northern trial is in June – we\u2019d love to see you there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The first live trial of 2025 turned out to be a fine one, split between two venues over the weekend, each with their own charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was great to see so many familiar faces along with some relative newbies. I had the pleasure of judging some rounds on both days, but the hard work was done by Tanya and Rhia who designed and assembled courses and judged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Special mentions must go to- Steve and Harry- Steve achieved a L3 Championship with Harry, a feat he wasn\u2019t sure he would achieve due to Harry\u2019s advancing years. Splendid work Team Harry! We had a couple of Perfect Scores- Deirdre and Sweep in L2 and Julie and Veva in Level 1. It\u2019s not easy achieving a 210 in TDR so you should be proud of this achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I loved seeing Laura and Isla, a relatively new team, strut their stuff in Level 1; what a happy little dog with so much potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It\u2019s always refreshing to see young handlers work and this weekend we welcomed back Bethany along with her Norwegian Buhund, Ruby. Certainly not the easiest of breeds to handle but Bethany worked hard to achieve her L1 Title over the weekend. Well done Team Ruby!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A big congratulations to all of you who worked and achieved Titles and Championships over the weekend, a fantastic start to the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A small and perfectly formed mini-trial was hosted yesterday by Judge Cristen of Ruff Diamond Dog Training at the absolutely superb Kirkley Hall Equestrian Centre near Ponteland, Northumberland. We are completely spoiled at this venue due to the size of the working area which provides two ginormous rings that enable courses to be flowing and inventive in layout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Judge Jayne indulged her creativity with two vastly different level 3 Plus courses that tested a range of skills across exercises from all levels and kept both handlers and dogs on their toes\/paws via the use of the tunnel, jumps, distance control, recalls and fast pace exercises!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The vast space also provided a generous warm up area which enabled the teams to take a few minutes using effective play strategies before heading for the start of the course.  Ann and Stuie played a \u201cfind it\u201d game with his favourite toy that Ann hid underneath a pile of the arena surface, Emma and Wilf engaged in interactive play with his toy, and Judge Cris & Rossi performed a variety of tricks.  The benefit of this was evident in the engagement between handler and dog as they worked their rounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This is only our second trial at this venue, and as it is an active equestrian centre the distraction element is significant.  Many of the northern rally folks and their dogs are relatively new to working the level 2 exercises in a live trial environment.  Judge Cristen provided them with varied and challenging courses to test their skills.  Everyone accepted the challenge willingly and used effective reward strategies via food, play and touch to support their dogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We would echo what Steve has said in his blog regarding trials, we can\u2019t do it without the support and camaraderie of the Talking Dogs Rally community.  We are very fortunate to have Gemma Kermode as our trial secretary for both the live and online trials and we are always grateful to Gemma for everything she does for TDR\u00ae and the support she provides to everyone involved. Huge thanks as always to Emma, Sara, Ann, Jude and Lauren for helping to set up fencing, strip down courses and move equipment within the venue and to\/from Judges vehicles, we really do appreciate everything that you all do each time we have a live trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Brenzett Trial, October 2024- and 2023!-Reflections of a Show Secretary; Steve Carpenter<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The village hall at Brenzett is a nice venue for a trial.  It is a quiet hall on Romney Marsh that can be divided, giving a large area for rallyers to sit and chat, whilst the show secretary can hide the other side of the partition to deal with the day\u2019s admin. Where the judges can take a break and have some lunch served from the small, but functional galley.  The flat grassy area outside \u2013 regularly mowed so the grass is short \u2013 provides adequate space for two good size rings, and there is room for quite a few cars in the car park, provided they are parked well (well done Jojo!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The downside? \u2013 well, Brenzett is on the backside of the Universe!  It is a good thing there are people in TDR who really don\u2019t mind travelling long distances to enjoy working with their dogs.  But as the man said, if you organise it, they will come. And come you do!  We started holding a rally at Brenzett in 2021 for the teams that train in Kent to provide a fun, end of season get together:  31 rounds were worked before lunch and we had a (very) fun team competition to end the day.  We had entries for 44 rounds in 2022; 65in 2023 and a fantastic 88 this year, including 30 at level 1 – So many, we had to change judging arrangements as Lisa would have been well over her quota for the day if she had judged all of the puppy and veteran level 1 rounds.  And the entries are now from all over the south of England, from Norfolk to the Isle of Wight \u2013 in October for goodness sake!  All good indicators for the future of TDR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The judges:  I am lucky in having Tanya and Rhia as co-conspirators in arranging these trials.  Without their commitment to judging every year, it would be a more onerous task to get the event off the ground.  Aimee Matthews, Sue Coulstock, Jacky Ruddock and, this year, Lisa Fiske have all given up their time to judge for us.  It just wouldn\u2019t be the same without you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Of course, the weather matters.  It has the power to bring everyone together, sitting in a warm glow of Autumn sunshine, or to drive everyone to sit in their cars, in solitude, until the need for another coffee or some crumb of human contact (or a wee), provides the incentive to dash through rain and wind.  We have been very lucky.  We have had some idyllic weather that has turned the day into a late summer picnic.  Even this year, despite the breeze and afternoon drizzle, it could have been much worse \u2013 it was much worse after everyone had left and we were trying to pack the kit in the cars!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

    As the number of entries has increased each year, catering has had to improve.  No longer is it possible to leave an honesty box in the galley and let everyone help themselves to tea and coffee as they want it \u2013 there just isn\u2019t the space.  Deirdre and Beth provided the home-made cakes and cupcakes, and they, and anyone with a few moments to spare, served the steady stream of customers.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And that is the clue to what makes this trial work \u2013 \u201canyone with a few moments to spare\u201d.  There is no team of people to marshal the car park or man the gates to the rings.  It is all down to people stepping in and doing the small jobs that crop up during the day.  But the big one is when the judging finishes and the rings need taking down.  That orange netting is a nightmare.  The netting, and supporting poles, have to go back in a box, so the netting must be rolled tightly to fit.  It is bad enough when it\u2019s dry, but wet and covered in leaves, it is no fun at all.  And it\u2019s at the end of the day when all you want to do is go home, sit down and have cup of tea.  So to see people spread round the field, pulling posts and rolling up that blessed netting is just, wow!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There are moments from every year that will remain in the memory.  For many of us in Kent, watching Alison and Ida work their last \u2013 perfect 210 \u2013 round together in 2023, after achieving the feat so many times before, is one we treasure.  It was wonderful that Goose repeated the feat with Alison this year.  Or, at the other extreme, watching Rhia working my Harry and being made to be the straight man for his sense of humour (he only does it to people he likes!). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And that is my reflection on the day \u2013 one of immense gratitude to everyone who travels to the back of beyond to take part; who helps in whatever way they can from judging to walking paperwork back to the hall, to make the day work; and everyone who creates memories of an enjoyable day with their dogs \u2013 thank you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What a wonderful weekend us three judges had at the trial run by Jane Ward who was supported by a large team of helpers. The venue in Holnest is owned by Watercombe Dogs and is nestled into the beautiful Dorset Countryside; it really is the most ideal of settings for Talking Dogs Rally. It was great to welcome new competitors along with some of our seasoned teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I had the pleasure of judging L1, PL2 and L2 rounds. This is a novelty for me now as I rarely get the opportunity to watch the newbies work. There are for too many teams to mention individually so I have selected a few which I judged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Rebecca introduced us to the sweetest little Border Terrier Billie who worked with lively enthusiasm to achieve an Outstanding in Level 1. This is the sort of little dog who goes on to bounce her way to achieving great scores in TDR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Carol with her little Shih Tzus ,Humphrey and Hector. The wet grass and attractive smells are not always easy for small dogs and Carol had to work hard to gain and maintain the boys\u2019 attention. Carol managed an impressive haul of 4 Aces and 1 Outstanding over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was Jayne-Marie\u2019s first live trial with her GSP, Myla. Jayne-Marie didn\u2019t let the fact that Myla peed in the ring on her first round mar the day and went on to success in her other 3 rounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was Penny and Demi\u2019s first live trial and the pair worked well together achieving their Level 1 Title over the weekend. Penny\u2019s nervousness was masked by her permanent smile as the team navigated the course; well done Team Demi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Clive and the adorable Cassie the Labrador joined us on Sunday. Clive wisely used his rounds as training sessions to keep Cassie motivated and happy to work. This team shows tremendous potential and is one to watch in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I was happy to be there when one of our experienced handlers, Frances, had a breakthrough with Joker her aptly named rescue Lurcher. Joker is an intelligent dog but not the easiest boy to handle in the ring. He is easily distracted but, when he works, boy does he glide along with grace and flow. Joker achieved 2 Outstanding scores, and Frances was rewarded for all the time and effort she puts into training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Judge Sue worked her two Shelties over the weekend. It\u2019s always difficult to fit in your own dogs when judging and Sue had little warm-up time but rather had to walk into the ring and get on with it! Both boys worked well, achieved great results and pleased their handler no end!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Rob and Nellie the Golden Retriever impressed me this weekend. Nellie enjoys working but works steadily in the ring. Rob accommodates Nellie\u2019s natural speed and doesn\u2019t try to rush her; regulating your working as a team is so important. Congratulations on achieving your Level 1 Championship Rob and Nellie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Congratulations to Ann and Dexter for achieving your Veteran Level 1 Championship. Ann you give us judges so much joy listening to your chat as you progress round the course! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    One of our most experienced handlers, Judge Jacky B, achieved the ultimate accolade in our sport by gaining her Level 3 Plus Championship over the weekend. Jacky works her beautiful ginger crossbreed Amber, a rescue girl who hasn\u2019t had the easiest journey to get to where she is today, with such patience and calmness and the team is just a joy to watch. Congratulations on being the first team to achieve this award, Marley Black would be so proud of his sister!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Congratulations to ALL OF THE TEAMS who worked this weekend and made the trial such a friendly supportive event. Success looks different to all teams and cannot be viewed solely as rosettes gained. One of the handlers summed up my thoughts exactly when she said ,’I’m just so pleased that he was happy to come with me round the ring. A little while ago he was scared of everything and now he’s found something which gives him confidence.’ This is why us judges love the sport!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    September Mini Trial near Hailsham-Blog by Jacky R.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

     I was once again invited to judge Lyn Storey\u2019s annual mini trial, this time in a new venue with a large grass area allowing ample room to space out the course. The sun shone on teams as they negotiated two Puppy and Level 1 courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The two puppies were just delightful!  Crossbreed Alana worked well with Zoe and achieved two Aces in her first live trial- a great achievement. Her spiral was textbook as she flowed and high-stepped effortlessly between the cones.  Cathy handled her little Cockapoo Martha beautifully and knew when to turn her rounds into training and learning opportunities. Martha is a young immature fluffball who will blossom when all of her learning clicks in. Cathy was patient and calm- lovely to watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    David worked George beautifully as always and achieved his Level 1 Title with ease. David will never be satisfied until he achieves perfection and George is, without a doubt, a potential 210 dog! I\u2019m looking forward to judging Team George in Level 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Isabelle worked her cute little Crossbreed Monty who is looking so Patterdale now even though his DNA test says differently! The progress Isabelle has made with Monty is incredible and the tight bond between the pairing is clear. They achieved two Aces and have a great deal of potential. Keep up the good work Team Monty!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lyn worked four of her dogs. It\u2019s nerve wracking for a trainer to work their own dogs in front of their pupils so I take my hat off to Lyn for working so many on the day! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Jack the Whippet showed focus, worked well and achieved two Aces which gained him his Level 1 Title. Lyn handled Jack beautifullly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Zoom the Whippet lived up to his name on occasion but still pulled off an impressive Outstanding and Ace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Josie the Tibetan Terrier managed to achieve a Good and was awarded her Level 1 Title. Her focus was not as good as normal probably because she was working on home territory. Josie certainly made Lyn work!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How cute is little Yogi the Crossbreed! Yogi is a little livewire who is proving a training challenge. When she matures and settles into work, I\u2019m sure that this little girl will achieve great things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    IMPORTANT RULE UPDATE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    PERMITTED EQUIPMENT WHEN WORKING A TDR\u00ae ROUND<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    COLLARS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It is vital that the equipment you choose to use in the ring allows you to always keep a loose lead during your round. We encourage the use of a simple flat collar with a buckle or snap fastening, but we recognise that this may not be right for all teams. We also allow the use of well- fitted harnesses with the lead only connected at one point. We allow double check collars made entirely of fabric. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Keeping in mind the safety of all, we permit the use of head-collars by young handlers with strong dogs and elderly or disabled handlers with exuberant\/strong dogs. If you are unsure whether this is appropriate for your team please contact Jacky RUDDOCK to discuss further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We do not allow any collars which we consider to be overly aversive including prong collars, check chains and electric \/ vibration\/spray collars. We have also added to this list double check collars INCORPORATING CHAINS. Gundog slip collars are also not allowed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    LEADS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We allow all leads which clip onto a collar or harness.  No slip leads and collars are allowed. We do not allow chain leads or extending leads. Please ensure that your lead is long enough to enable it to be always kept loose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    On Sunday 8th September, I hosted and judged a mini Talking Dogs Rally trial at Monkchester Community Centre, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Mini trials are fantastic for those just starting out in Talking Dogs Rally. They are small events, often focused on just one level, though not always, and with smaller numbers of entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For this trial, we had Level 1, Veteran Level 1 and Puppy. To make the day run smoothly and to minimise course changes the Level 1 and Veteran Level 1 were the same courses and for puppy a few stations were removed. Due to space limitations (we were in a community centre), the only people in the hall were the competing team and myself judging. This arrangement helps to calm competitors\u2019 nerves, as there are no spectators to add pressure. However, I do love it when there\u2019s enough room for an audience because everyone is always so encouraging. That said, I heard that everyone was very chatty out in the car park, and the level of support was fantastic. That\u2019s exactly what I love about Talking Dogs Rally \u2013 the sense of community and supportiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In total, we had nine teams participating. It was lovely to welcome Claire and Wendy who braved Great North Run traffic and came up from Darlington. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Claire with Maisie, Lily, Indi and Clover<\/strong> – yes that\u2019s right, Claire entered 4 different dogs! That is no mean feat, especially as it was only Claire\u2019s second trial. Although the rounds are relatively short (A few minutes usually) working different dogs is always hard and with it being a small trial Claire was non stop. Throughout the day Claire\u2019s handling went from strength to strength and in total she came away with four Outstanding scores and two Good scores. Plus Claire and Maisie got their Level 1 Title. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Gemma and Dreya<\/strong> – Dreya is my dog that Gemma works and trains, so she had the added task of keeping Dreya\u2019s focus on her and away from me. Gemma handled this very well and they came away with two Outstanding scores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Georgina and Devon<\/strong> – This was the first trial for Devon and several years since Georgina has entered a Talking Dogs Rally Trial. They both took it in their stride coming away with a Good and an Outstanding score<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Wendy and Jax<\/strong> – Wendy and Jax have only recently started doing Talking Dogs Rally and this was their first trial and in a new environment. Wendy managed her nerves well and they came away with two Good rosettes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Jude and Florence<\/strong> – This was Florence\u2019s first trial and she handled it like a pro. Jude\u2019s experience at Talking Dogs Rally was clear and they gained an Outstanding and an Ace rosette<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    David and Hamish<\/strong> – This was Hamish\u2019s last trial at puppy level (Puppy is from 6 months to 18 months) as he\u2019s almost 18 months old. This age can be a challenging time as many dogs are going through adolescence, but it wasn\u2019t a problem for Hamish expertly handled by David. They gained an Outstanding and an Ace rosette as well as their Puppy Championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Last week we enjoyed the usual fun and frolics at a weekend trial in Risby hosted by Lucy and her trusty band of helpers. The weather was kind to us and some of us were even a little sun kissed on the following Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was great to spend time with some of our regulars who have been trialing for some years with a series of dogs. I now class these folk as friends and I value our interactions during trials. We welcomed back Sophie who some of you will remember as a judge in the early days of the sport. She competed with her gorgeous Yogi and they demonstrated that TDR is a little like riding a bike, a skill you don\u2019t forget despite a lengthy hiatus! We are hopeful that Sophie will rejoin us as a judge in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Many teams are now joining us for live trials after entering our online trials and catching the bug! It\u2019s great for us judges to see these teams in the flesh after judging them virtually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There were many great rounds and AOEs, Titles and Championships were plentiful. Our new young handler, Bethany, did herself proud gaining a Good and an Outstanding with her Norwegian Buhund over the weekend. We love seeing children having a go and often demonstrating superior handling skills to the adults!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The main issue causing teams to NQ or converting to a Training Round was lack of focus in the ring. Many dogs perform well in a hall yet struggle to cope with the sniff fest outdoors. There is no substitute for proofing the exercises in a range of different environments and in the presence of challenging distractions. The other notable fault was tight turns despite the ample space the rings offered; if you work KC as well as TD Rally ensure that you remember which one you\u2019re doing at the time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Earlier this month we shared a wonderful weekend on the Isle of Wight trialing with Lisa and the Lead On DT crew. The weather was mixed- torrential rain one minute and brilliant sunshine the next. The trial was well attended and the judges were certainly kept busy. Several people joined us from the mainland and were welcomed in typical Isle of Wight style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The standard of work on the island is generally high and Lisa and Company\u2019s input is evident in both style and content of the rounds. There were many excellent rounds and the newbies certainly did themselves proud. Out of the 150 rounds there were 98 Ace, 10 Outstanding and 9 Good along with 7 AOEs, 10 Titles and 6 Championships earned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The main issue for handlers in the ring was sniffing and this is clearly an area which needs attention. It is difficult not to jerk the lead to get your dog \u2018back in the room\u2019 but this is costly in terms of points and the possibility of an NQ. It pays to have a range of phrases which can get your dog\u2019s attention instead of resorting to the often heard (and often penalised) \u2018watch\u2019. Nerves often stop handlers from verbally engaging with their dogs in the ring even though they have been chatting away together outside the ring. Judges love listening to your chat and praise as you work your round!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Many thanks to Lisa, Adam, Hannah and the club who catered so brilliantly for us all weekend; the food was amazing. Special thanks to Ginny and Sarah who manned the table and managed the admin. procedure- you were both brilliant (you\u2019re not sacked!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Talking Dogs Rally Online Trial June 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Talking Dogs Rally Online Trial opened on Monday 3rd<\/sup> June 2024 and closed at 6pm on Friday 21st<\/sup> June 2024. The \u201cback office\u201d format for this online trial was tweaked due to unforeseen circumstances when the only date for a live Risby summer trial clashed with judging for the online trial.   Rather than cancel the online trial that was already in the calendar, it was decided that the online trial would be run by the Northern Judges \u2013 Amie (Isle of Mull), Cristen (Newcastle Upon Tyne) and Jayne (Yorkshire).   We were expertly supported by Gemma who stepped into the role of verifier and worked tirelessly throughout the three-week period to ensure rounds were received, verified and entered accurately into Judging lists.  Gemma also dealt with all of the pre and post judging admin!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There were 95 entries received for verification, 93 entries went forward to be judged from Puppy to L3 Plus, there were no entries for Veteran Level 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There were 78 ACE, 9 OUTSTANDING and 2 GOOD scores awarded.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There were two PERFECT 210 rounds and the teams that achieved these should be very proud of themselves as they demonstrated a solid understanding of the exercises, and showed superb team work with great communication between handler and dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was evident that teams who had a clear reward strategy with both food and touch rewards scored highly as their dogs were fully motivated and engaged throughout the round.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Exercises that appeared to cause issues were as follows;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2022 360 circle right \u2013 too small\/tight \u2013 handler simply turning a tight circle with feet together on the spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2022 Call Fronts \u2013 dog sitting in front \u2013 or dogs being sent to heel very quickly without any momentary pause in front. Work with your trainers to proof this behaviour as a solid exercise so that Judges can see that moment of pause whilst standing in front before you send them to heel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2022 Disability Modifications \u2013 if you have them \u2013 use them \u2013 eg if your dog has a DM because of health issues that makes it uncomfortable for them to perform a sit \u2013 if your DM permits you to switch the sit to a stand \u2013 then do that \u2013 don\u2019t lose AC marks asking them to sit when they don\u2019t feel comfortable doing that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2022 If an exercise has gone wrong \u2013 do not try and correct it \u2013 this will always lose more marks \u2013 just move on to the next exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2022 Luring \u2013 the difference between a lure and a hand signal is that the Lure guides the dog, encouraging the dog to follow the hand or signal continuously throughout the exercise \u2013 a hand signal is displayed for a short period of time, often just a quick showing of the hand which is then removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Online trial etiquette<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Regrettably we do have to mention a few etiquette points regarding the online trial.  These are mentioned here so that we can all work together to ensure that the next online trial is more efficient for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Inadequate Space<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We had to reject 2 higher level rounds at verification as the space utilised was too small to accommodate the course.  Space is particularly important for the higher levels which can contain Recalls, Jumps and Tunnel exercises which require a specified distance in order to perform the exercise correctly.  Course design is a tricky task, and Judges are required to design courses that have good flow throughout and provide teams with a degree of challenge, this is the same whether it is a live or online trial.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Please consider whether your available space is big enough for the course to flow. If you cannot set up and film anywhere except your back garden, and you still want to enter, please consider entering a lower level that will fit into your garden.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We take no pleasure in rejecting rounds for whatever reason, but as Judges we are required to comply with the ethos and rules of Talking Dogs Rally course design.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Entries<\/strong> received after the closing date\/time<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The closing date and time for the online trial is specified for good reasons;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2022 The time frame of the online trial is specified so that every team has exactly the same opportunity to enter the trial.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2022 There is often a flood of entries on the Friday before the trial has closed \u2013 if these are still coming in after 6pm, this means trial admin cannot focus on getting entries that were received prior to 6pm to Judges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2022 Trial admin need to ensure they have captured all entries and provided workable film links to Judges \u2013 late entries often require paperwork that has been finalised to be re-visited and amended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2022 Judges need to get on with judging rounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    o All judging whether live or online trial is done on a voluntary basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    o Judges clear time in their diaries so that they can give the online judging their full attention and often do not have time in their schedule to revisit a class when a late entry has been received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    o Judging, live or online trials is mentally and physically demanding \u2013 having to return to Judging when you think you have finished is not pleasant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2022 Trial admin and Judges have limited free time to pull the results together and we want to ensure all teams are not kept waiting for results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The next online trial is in the diary to open on Monday 30<\/strong>th<\/sup><\/strong>September 2024<\/strong> and will close <\/strong>for entries to be received <\/strong>by<\/strong> 6pm on <\/strong> Friday 25<\/strong>th<\/sup><\/strong> October 2024<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Start thinking ahead now about where you will set up and film your rounds, speak with your trainers about getting group sessions in the diary where you can all support each other to enter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Don\u2019t leave filming and submitting your rounds to the last minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Massive thanks to Jacky R and Jayne for coming to Northumberland to judge at our first full trial of 2024. We were at a new venue, Kirkley Hall Equestrian Centre which gave us loads of space and meant we were able to offer all levels including the new 3+. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We welcomed some new teams to their first Talking Dogs Rally trial; it was lovely to see new faces  and to welcome back a couple of teams that haven\u2019t had the chance to enter a trial for a while. There was a lovely, friendly atmosphere thoughout the day with everyone supporting and encouraging each other; one of the many things I love about Talking Dogs Rally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Being an equestrian centre it did come with its challenges; the floor was a little bumpy and of course had lots of smells that some of the dogs found irresistible. However, there were also lots of positives including the ability to have two large rings allowing for beautiful flowing rounds and space for spectators (This isn\u2019t always possible when we run mini trials).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For those dogs that found the setting a challenge it was great to see handlers changing into training rounds and ensuring that both they and their dog had a positive experience. Everyone did very well with a range of Ace, Outstanding and Good rosettes being awarded and very well deserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This was our first experience of the new L3+ rounds and I\u2019m not going to lie, at first it looked extremely daunting! But, it is so much fun with some fabulous new stations and large, flowing courses. Between judging Rossi and I had a go at the morning and afternoon L3+ rounds and loved it.

    The beautiful Isle of Mull off the coast of Western Scotland was once again the venue for our most northerly trial. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Thanks to Moira Owers of Paws by the Loch dog training, we are very fortunate to be able to hold this trial in the grounds of Duart Castle and the stunning backdrop of the Sound of Mull, Ferries, Cruise-liners, Yachts, fog and of course the Castle adds so much to the experience and definitely provides a distracting environment with all manner of wildlife scents, tourist coaches and a noisy cattle grid to name a few. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Mull rally folk were delighted to welcome Talking Dogs Rally folks from the Isle of Wight, with an approximate round trip of 1200 miles to get there!   New friendships were formed and I heard Moira saying that she might travel to the Isle of Wight to enter one of their trials\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    None of the distractions in this environment bothered the rally folks and it was definitely business as usual when they came into the rings to work their rounds.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    One of my favourite things about rally is that the exercises are made up of natural life skills that transfer to any situation, and this was definitely a trial to see great rally skills in action.  Exercises were performed with confidence, and I saw genuine partnerships between handler and dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I was particularly impressed with the performance of the call front exercises which had an accurate straight stand in front followed by a momentary pause before sending to the relevant heel position.  It was also good to see handlers working to the pace of their dog, and not rushing or pushing them out of that pace.  Well done everyone on super handling skills that supported all of your dogs to succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Now to the results;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lisa and Reuben \u2013 Level 1 – achieved ACE scores, one of which was a PERFECT 210 which was in their final Level 1 round of the weekend.  This was such a pleasure to Judge as it was one of those rounds that only happens when everything aligns in a single moment.  The success in this round is due to Lisa\u2019s ability to understand and know Reuben\u2019s individuality, and then transfer the confidence he has gained in training to a live trial environment through clear communication and engagement resulting in a round where everything flowed in perfect harmony.  A very well-deserved result.  They achieved their Level 1 Championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eve & Toffee \u2013 Level 1 – achieved OUTSTANDING and ACE scores and this wee dog has improved so much since her first trial experience last year when she cheekily grabbed the tail of Eve\u2019s Unicorn costume\u2026..no Unicorn\u2019s were harmed I might add\u2026\u2026 Toffee really enjoyed stepping up to Level 1 this year and had fun in the ring and with Eve as her handler Toffee has become quite the talented rally dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Emma & Sully \u2013 Level 1 – achieved ACE scores and given that Sully is a fast, fun rally dog, it is due to the calm and supportive handling by Emma that ensures Sully can quickly refocus and re-engage without dampening the enthusiasm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eve & Sona \u2013 Level 1 – achieved rosettes of every colour with GOOD, OUTSTANDING and ACE scores, impressive results with Sona, a busy spaniel who has the most impressive engagement for heelwork during rally rounds and has improved so much since last year, well done Eve on helping Sona to improve and engage.  They achieved their Level 1 Title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sarah & Finn \u2013 Level 1 \u2013 ACE scores, and Pre-Level 2 \u2013 ACE scores achieved through quiet effective handling with accuracy in the performance of the exercises.  Such a lovely steady team to watch working rally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Kelly & JuJu \u2013 Level 1 – achieved an OUTSTANDING score.  It was great to see Kelly return with JuJu her Cane Corso, a breed that I have only seen doing Rally on the Isle of Mull, they have lots of potential to progress further with training and guidance.  Kelly quite rightly made use of the opportunity to provide Extra Rewards to JuJu during the round and it is always preferable to see handlers support their dogs this way and lose points for the Extra Reward rather than see a dog struggle or flatten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eve & Dot \u2013 Level 1 – achieved GOOD and ACE scores.  Dot and Eve are a true partnership in every sense and Dot has the most super engagement throughout the round and it is a delight to see them working rally.  I commend anyone who works multiple dogs in any dog sport, it is not an easy thing to do, but just putting that into context with regards to Eve, she not only works multiple dogs, she works multiple breeds; a Terrier, a Spaniel and a Collie\u2026\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ann & Dexter achieved ACE and OUTSTANDING scores in Veteran Level 2 which gave them their Veteran Level 2 Championship, and then began Veteran Level 1 with an ACE score.  Ann and Dexter are a team that always demonstrate great handling skills and engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Jayne & Snoopy \u2013 Veteran Level 1 \u2013 achieved an ACE score and are working towards their VL1 Title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Amie & Margo \u2013 Pre-Level 2 – achieved OUTSTANDING scores through lovely engagement from Margo, supported by super handling skills from Amie.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Hannah & Rubble \u2013 Pre-Level 2 – achieved ACE scores and demonstrated the importance of knowing your own dog and understanding what support they need during a rally round.  Hannah never pushed Rubble outside of his own pace and she allowed him time to process the cues and the environment.  They achieved an Award of Excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Vicky & Poppy \u2013 Pre-Level 2 \u2013 achieved ACE scores through super clear handling from Vicky.  Wee Poppy is a proper pocket rocket, quick, attentive and with clean exercise performance, a joy to see.  They achieved an Award of Excellence and their PL2 Title.  This team has great potential for the higher levels of rally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Amie & Tablet \u2013 Pre-Level 2 – achieved ACE scores with Tablet justifiably holding onto his TDR poster boy position through solid performances in the rally ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lisa & Rocco \u2013 Level 3 – <\/strong>achieved OUTSTANDING and ACE scores with stylish, engaged performances only scuppered by fast pace and jump exercises that raised the excitement levels for Rocco albeit expertly handled by Lisa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ann & Stuie \u2013 Level 3 – achieved GOOD and ACE scores taking them closer towards their Level 3 Championship.  Ann is to be commended on her handling skills as Stuie is a speedy wee dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I would like to express my thanks to Amie Matthews who is now resident on the Isle of Mull.  Amie wore many hats for this trial, including the organisation, paperwork, social events, judging and competing with her two lovely spaniels.  Well done Amie, all of your work was very much appreciated by everyone at the trial. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    On the days of the trial, Amie was ably assisted by her friend Eve Coles who provided us with a pop-up caf\u00e9 facility and kept me supplied with hot coffee and the most delicious bacon & sausage sandwiches.  I won\u2019t mention the gazebo\u2026..but there are photos\u2026..and thank goodness for the gentlemen from the Isle of Wight\u2026\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I would also like to thank our wonderful friends Fiona and Martin who very kindly enabled us to go to Mull this year by letting Ann and I stay with them in their beautiful Fionnophort home, and special thanks to Scampi and Gemma their two dogs who allowed three boy dogs to stay there too! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was a chilly but sunny day on Sunday 4th<\/sup> Feb for the first Northern trial of 2024, hosted by Judge Cristen and Ruff Diamond Dog Training in Newcastle Upon Tyne.  We were pleased to be inside in the warmth of the fabulous Monkchester Community Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This mini-trial covered all current levels and gave everyone a chance to show off their rally skills, taking on the challenge of creative course design from Judges Cristen and Jayne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The consistency of training was evident in all of the teams and everyone confidently tackled courses containing exercises they may not have previously encountered in addition to demonstrating solid skills with level 1 foundation exercises.  In particular, the Call Front exercises were executed with superb precision, with dogs coming cleanly to the front position into a solid and straight stand, pausing and waiting for the handler to cue them to the appropriate finish or forward position.  Well done to everyone for showing these exercises accurately and with great style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In the higher levels the distance control exercises were also performed with confidence, and the majority of teams demonstrated solid training skills for recall exercises with marks lost for anticipation, extra positions and handlers not adopting the correct position for angled recalls.  Everyone took on board feedback for future-proofing these exercises to enable their dogs to remain in position until the handler cues the next element of the exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The distraction exercises proved to be a challenge for one or two teams, and again feedback was given for setting the dog up to succeed with these exercises in future trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was delightful to see Harry the Scottish Terrier invent his own variation of a pivot exercise which incorporated a perfect spin and really should be a Level 4 exercise for the future!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Puppy Level<\/strong> David and wee Hamish (West Highland Terrier) gained two ACE scores in their first ever trial, and it will be wonderful to see this amazing team progress through the levels.  No pressure David, but there is the potential for an Award of Excellence if you gain another ACE score at your next trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Level 1\/Veteran L1<\/strong> Judge Cristen and pocket rocket Border Terrier Dreya gained two ACE scores in their first level 1 rounds. Vicky and her gorgeous Australian Doodles Rouggie and Mella achieved ACE scores in their rounds with Mella gaining her Level 1 Championship and Rouggie her Level 1 title and AOE. Sarah and her super speedy terrier Reo achieved two ACE scores and achieved their Level 1 Championship. Jude and Scottish Terrier Harry gained an OUTSTANDING and an ACE score.   Sirja and Daisy, a German Shepherd,put in two consistently near perfect rounds achieving ACE scores.  Sirja has the most wonderful clean handling style and Daisy is so responsive, always a delight to judge. Lesley and Cocker Spaniel Mitro achieved an ACE score, gaining their Level 1 title and demonstrating some solid rally skills. Gemma worked Cal who is Judge Cristen\u2019s veteran border collie, scoring an amazing 209 and a 206 which is an amazing achievement for both Gemma and Cal, well done. This was a first trial experience for Abbie and Obi a border collie, they showed that they have a good understanding of the exercises and will be a lovely partnership to see develop their skills.  They achieved a GOOD and an OUTSTANDING score. Judge Jayne and cockerpoo Snoopy are working their way back down the levels now, Snoopy, like many of our TD family veteran dogs has a few age related issues, and they took on their first Veteran L1 course, worked it like the pro that he is and gained an ACE score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Pre-Level 2 \/ Veteran L2 \/ Level 2<\/strong>. Lauren and Jasper, a gorgeous red labrador with a fabulously consistent and steady rally style, gained an ACE score and their PL2 Title and AOE. Lauren and Jasper have always been a solid rally team, and this round really demonstrated their partnership and had a superb flow to it.  Well done Lauren and Jasper. Sarah and her Bedlington Cross Ted gained two ACE scores and took full advantage of the permissive nature of Talking Dogs Rally for Ted to wear his fleece jumper which enabled him to perform the down exercises on the hard flooring without feeling uncomfortable.   Ann & Dexter, a veteran Miniature Schnauzer, is also working his way back down the levels, and he always tackles everything he does with speed and commitment.  They achieved two ACE scores. Judge Jayne and Snoopy achieved an ACE score in VL2 which gives them the last score they need for their Veteran Level 2 Championship.  That\u2019s quite a collection of Talking Dogs Rally Championships that Snoopy has now achieved. Hazel worked Hank who is a veteran Pug owned by her Daughter, and they achieved an OUTSTANDING and a GOOD score.  Well done Hazel, it is not easy working multiple dogs in any sport, especially when one of the dogs is not your own. Hazel also worked Yogi who is her own younger Pug with a zest for fun.  It is fair to say that Yogi found the distance control, recalls and distractions difficult in this trial and Hazel took on board feedback for how she can enable Yogi to succeed in future trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Level 3 \/ Veteran L3<\/strong>. Ann and wee Stuie, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel gained two ACE scores, and it won\u2019t be long before Stuie has his Level 3 Championship.  Wee Stuie is more than ready for taking on the new L3+ exercises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Judge Cristen and her Dalmatian Cross Rossi put in two fabulous VL3 rounds achieving ACE scores and gaining their championship<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Thank you to everyone for entering the trial, supporting each other to achieve, and helping Cris to set up before and clear up afterwards.  A trial host cannot do this alone, and your support is always very much appreciated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Thank you to Lucy for hosting the trial and giving me the opportunity to judge, and thank you to participants entering the first Talking Dogs Rally trial of 2024.  Although it was a tad chilly outside, the Village Hall was warm, and it was very much appreciated that Lucy had provided a catering service with hot drinks and delicious bacon sandwiches!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    An indoor trial environment can present different environmental factors for handlers and dogs, but it was great to see teams overcome these and set their dogs up to succeed and progress through their respective classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I have taken a different approach with this blog to previous ones, as I feel it is important to share a few of my overall judging observations amongst the wider Talking Dogs Rally participants so that we can all aim to improve our trial skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Additional Cues<\/strong> The indoor environment highlighted where handlers are using additional cues that might not normally be picked up in an outdoor setting, and when a handler made repetitive clicking or kissing noises to motivate their dog this is amplified in the hall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Another type of additional cue is tapping your leg and wiggling your fingers which again tends to be done repeatedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sometimes handlers are not aware that they are doing this, so it is useful to ask someone else to watch and listen for what you do when working a round, and then look at fading out any repetitive noises or hand signals that are identified.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Handler nerves<\/strong> There is no doubt that entering the trial ring to be judged causes every handler to feel nervous. This is absolutely normal for everyone entering the trial ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Try flipping the nerves and emotions over.  Instead of focusing on what you think your dog cannot do, or will not do, look at the positives of what your dog can do and what your dog enjoys doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Use your walk-through to identify those exercises that you know you have not fully proofed yet, and have a strategy for how you will deal with this during the round, eg, move onto the next exercise, additional cue, retry.  Try to not let one specific exercise affect the whole of your round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Take a strategic approach to the things that don\u2019t go well, make a note of which exercises were challenging and work with your trainer to break the exercise down and proof it for future trials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
